Blackout in Cambridge

A power outage blamed on a transmission line issue left 17,000 people without power in Cambridge just before the evening rush hour yesterday.  Since this is New England in winter and the sun had just set, that meant it was a great time to be using a 5D Mark III with its ridiculous high ISO performance.

I was photographing people on Mass Ave, the city’s central artery, when the smell of acrid smoke drew me around the corner two blocks away.  It was a car burning on Magazine Street, surrounded by the inky blackness of a city lit only by headlights and the occasional battery powered auxiliary light.  A strange scene to be sure, and one I doubt I’ll ever see again.
